well I've been talking back and forth about this bike and this is what its come down to. its a 1978 FLH (he says matching frame & engine). rebuilt motor with all s&s parts, andrews cam, s&s rods & crank wheels. has new primo 1.5" primary setup, s&s super e carb, all new cables, sprocket, chain, tires, new 5 speed in a 4 speed case rev tec tranny, new charging system, and ignition system. It needs front fender, paint job alla round, tuned (has never ran), new battery and some wiring finished. he says he has receipts for $7000 in the engine alone.

he just seems to be pretty set on 6500 when I've found a few similar ones that are in running and general ok condition for 8500-9000. You guys feel this bike worth taking a chance. I haven't seen it in person yet its 260 miles away.

The price is high for what it is. For your first shovel find one as close to stock as possible. That is no major motor or frame alterations. You don't know how well the work was done when he coverted it to a stroker. There are lots of shovels out there at resonable prices. Remember FLH, FXE, FXS, and FXWG all share the same frame, motor and transmission. The differences are in the front end, brakes, tanks, fenders and cosmetics.

Again, were not sayin its not got money into her. All were saying is thats theres tons of running Shovels in pristine condition for the same money. And why would someone dump 7 grand into a rebuild. Thats over double what something like that would cost at most major shops. Are you looking for a hoped up stroker? Looking to put the whoopin' on Evo's and Twinkies? If not, look for something together and running, that way you're already ahead of the curve and won't have to start wrenching on the bike till the first part falls off, well over a week into ownership!

I'm in British Columbia...and I scored a BEAUTIFUL 76 FLH...totally upgraded...
lots more Chrome than that one....and mine DOES have an 80 Cube upgrade.

they are out there for sure!!!
British Columbia is only a short drive away...and we have Shovels coming up on Craigslist all the time.

If you like to tinker, and play Bikes..a Shovel is AWESOME!!
and you will never get the Harley Sound from an Evo, that you will from a Shovel.

I Love Evo's...and I love Shovels.
BUT!!.that one is a bit high priced.
I paid $5000.oo Canadian for mine....and it is in far better shape, and I rode it away.

peace,
Kev.

I would be very wary of the bike if I were you. That is a lot of money at the outset for a project bike. Second, once it has been stroked as it were, if whoever did it did a poor job, you could be buying a world of hurt - and don't forget, these are the guys who rebuilt it so it doesn't run, Lord knows what they did or how they did what they did in the guts of your motor.

I would look for an as close to stock bike as possible. Shovels are great - if you are going to wrench them yourself. If you are looking for older, but less maintenance, perhaps an EVO? I am not trying to talk you out of shovel, but they are like runway model: They run great when they do, they feel great under you, but they are high maintenance.

At the very least, I would at least look for something else. I live in Ontario. I bough my FLT in Ohio this year off of eBay for a sweet deal.

Anyway you go, have fun...and good luck.

"Back in the day", S&S was very open about their motor kits and the 88" was listed as Unreliable and the 96" was listed as very unreliable. I will tell you that the saving grace of the shovel-4 speed was the 55 speed limit, there are those who will argue this but I put over 100,000 miles on shovels. If this is you first bike, this is not what you want to do with your hard earned money. The electrical alone is a nightmare, Cosmetic means the parts are probubly bad. Save your money and try to find a good used Evo with a 5 speed that has not been f---ed with. To NOBLECE80-YES it is the same motor, During 78 they changed the displacement from 74" to 80" but it is the same motor.
