I'm trying to help a friend who lives in DeBarry Fl with getting a 1982 flt running that his dad left him when he passed away.
I drove down last weekend and was surprised at how good of shape the bike was in...minus a few little esoteric issues. It's been covered in his garage and now he thinks he may want to sell it. I told him that it really should be running before he lists it.
He cranked it less than 2 years ago and I guess it ran fine. Now the battery is dead and won't charge, plus there's no oil in it. So the work begins...
For me to get this at least cranking are there any ideas besides just get a new battery and check/change all the fluids? should I spray a tiny bit of lubricating oil in through the spark plug holes a day or so before I try to turn it over? I've heard from wrenches that's a good idea when a bike hasn't been fired up in a while. They've also said that if the motor is locked up and it wont turn over...it's toast. I did put it in gear a roll it and I thought I felt or kinda heard the pistons moving (I had taken plugs out).
I may trailer it back up here to Jacksonville so i can have all my tools available, but wanted to try at least to get it to fire up.
It's a nice bike...and anything that old will take some TLC, but it looks like a really fun project to get it back in shape. I know these shovels can be a handful from researching and talking to folks, but between this site and the good feedback folks provide I think we may have a diamond in the rough.
Just because there is no oil on the dipstick may not mean it has no oil in it.After sitting for a while it may have drained down into the crankcase,so do not over fill!
Yes you should put a new battery in it and I would also remove the plugs and squirt some WD40 in the cylinders and keep in mind that when you start cranking it oil may start comming out of the breather.Don't panic it is common after they have sat for a while and the oil has drained down for this to happen.I suggest a drip pan under the engine,just in case! Keep us posted!
Good advice fly,Im gonna add alittle to it though,Pull the plugs and squirt something in it.Me personally id use a little auto trans fluid...Also drain the gas tank and pull the float bowl off the carb and clean the jets...Put about a 1/2qt of oil in the oil tank if it is empty...Put a new battery in it...Put it all back together except the plugs,put a rag over th spark holes and hit the starter button,hopefully the engine will turn over,and spray all the trans fluid out.Put plugs in it,add some gas,whack the throttle a few times,pull the choke cable out and hit the starter button.Should start,and smoke like hell,and probably run oil all over the place.Do freak out as its just the oil in the crankcase,itll stop sooner or later.
sounds like Legacy has it. Also, don't be surprised if the clutch slips now. When I got mine, it had drained all the oil into the motor, and it in turn made it's way into the primary chaincase, soaking into the clutch plates. I ended up putting new ones in cuz they were totally saturated from sitting so long in the oil bath.
