Default fork leaking fluid

Iam jumping over from the Ironhead forum, bought a 72 FLT couple days ago, been wanting one for a while. nice solid bike with up dated brakes, new charging system and new top end.only issue I have with her is a leaking front leg its on the cap side of the front fork around the front axle.local bike shop said the only cure is complete rebuild.so Iam looking for any advice on this and any thing else I should know about this bike. thanks

lagunatic,
Definitely rebuild both fork assemblies, either yourself, with a friend or have the shop do it. No sense letting it leak because it will cause the bike handle badly eventually.

You've ruffled some feather with others about your FLT, anyway if its a '72, see if there is any play in the lower leg to tube at the top of the leg (front to rear play), to see if the bushings are worn or if its just a bad seal. Either way you have to tear it all apart to do anything.

Yeah,You will have too pull the tubes out and put some seals in it as the leak will only get worse. Too Bad,but at least it is only an afternoon job to do.

I have checked for play in the lowers all looks good.I pulled front wheel off to check the seals on the bottom of the lowers and their is a brass washer changed the washer and that fixed her,but the local cycle shop told me that the brass washers only fit the 80s and up and that the 72 has a papper seal in it,so rechecked the title and case #s say shes a 72 flh so mybe someone has changed the front on her???to a later model.I dont know will try to post a pic of it.THANKS for the help
