Cool Old tank liner chipping...

OK, some time in the bikes past someone put tank liner in it. It's a silver finish lining. Perhaps the surface prep was not done right or perhaps it's just tired, but it's flaking.

I read numerous suggestions about shaking the tanks with bolts, nails, BB's, etc., in them to remove the old liner. I chose Pellet gun pellets because they have corners and edges. Shook each tank for quite some time with little result. Busted loose the already flaking pieces is all.

I purchased Kreem to reline the tanks but understand you can't reline until "all" the previous liner is removed. So, how do you remove "all" the old liner? Some I can't even scrape off with a screw driver!

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Try some Acitone or MEK. Let it soak, either are strong solvents, highly flamable. If you get it clean and its not rusty, I wouldn't seal it. I know more people that always have problems so they leave'em bare. My '01 Twinkie didn't have anything from the factory. My Low Rider still has original Grey coating.

Alway taken my tanks to a radiator shop and had them clean them out. Come out extra clean and look brand new. They will also pressure test them for you.

Might want to check around on using the Kreem. Not all have had good luck with it. Just replaced a set of 25 year-old aftermarket tanks that had not been lined. For the age they held up well. Stock HD tanks should not need to be lined.

Default Radiator Shop

So, does the radiator shop chemically clean the insides preserving the paint or do they cook them taking the paint off as well?

Thanks,
