Here is a site that helps with vin # i.d. It may help. I also have done searches on google to find out. I currently ride a 79 FLH two tone tan and cream color, you know the one everybody says WillieG mixed, not so it's just a factory offering!

inthewind...I went to my official AMF 79 sales brochure for 1979 and found the following information. In 1979 they made the following models of the superglide bikes - FXEF 1200 Fat Bob, FXEF 80 Fat Bob, and FXE-1200 Superglide. They also made a custom called the FXS 1200 Lowrider (this was Willie G's contribution to a customized Superglide).

The sales brochure shows four color options available for the first three, vivid black, brilliant red, chestnut brown, and concord blue. Hard to tell from the single pic in the brochure but age and time could easily turn the chestnut color to a somewhat lighter shade. I am sure paint then was not as good as it is today. There are a couple of other colors listed, classic tan and creme which I believe was reserved for the Electra Glide models, and silver and charcoal grey which I know was reserved for Willie G's FXS.

As far as production numbers go...FXEF 1200 - 4,678; FXEF 80 - 5,264; FXE 1200 - 3,117; FXS 1200 - 3,827. This info comes from "The Harley Davidson Motor Company, An Official Eighty Year History", Second Edition, published by David Knight, 1987.

I cannot find any info on the number of bikes painted in a certain color, but production numbers alone verify he has one of the low production numbers for that model for that year. Hope he keeps it stock. Post a pic for all of when you get the chance.

Imboden, sweet looking bike. I am basically a pan guy but I really like the looks of the old superglides. A buddy of mine had a 79 FXS 1200 for years and years...and then he got divorced and when he remarried his bride decided that they were too dangerous for him to ride once they had a couple of rugrats. He sold it (can you say dumb as*). This was almost 10 years ago. I still see the bike and the guy he sold it to at a few watering holes. Everytime I do I call him and remind him of the stupid thing he did. His wife doesn't like to hear about it but I ain't married to her so it don't mean sh*t to me
