So in January of 1979 my dad walked into the local HD dealership and bought a 79 Lowrider and drove it until 2005 when he bought a Heritage. I had just returned from a deployment and he passed the Lowrider down to me in 05. I had been riding the bike up until July of last year and thats when I bought my Night Train so I have been neglecting the shovel for quite sometime. I pulled it out of the garage and got her fired up a couple of weekends ago, but just wanted to let you guys know that I'm going to quit modding my Train and put all my focus on restoring the Lowrider...
Yeah nothing has changed on it for the last 32 years. The pipes and aircleaner were put on when he bought it and the seat is somewhat new (personally don't like it, but the wife won't ride on the stock seat). But its got some rust and some nasty leaks that need to be taken care of and a fresh coat of paint along with shipping some parts off to get re-chromed. I don't plan on doing anything over the top. I just want to put it back the same as she sits, but in a fresh state.
Well I've been shopping around for parts. And have noticed that it's hard to find parts that aren't chrome. The bike didn't have much chrome from the factory and after talking to my dad last night he told me that the engine was wrinkle black from the factory and over the years it had burned off. The jugs have developed quite at bit of rust over the years so my first order of attack it going to be to pull the engine and tranny for a rebuild. I did pull the bike out yesterday and it fired right up to my surprise
What parts are you looking for ? I know a number of people who have 78 & 79 FX OEM stuff stashed for years , their bikes are way beyond using any it again and a lot of the stuff is pretty cherry .
PS if you do decide to change that seat let me know , mines gotta be 25 yrs by now .
Well the parts list is going to be long, but two of the parts that need to be replaced desperately are the primary cover and the upper triple tree. One of the turn signals won't stay bolted on as its stripped out. As it turns out it had a helicoil from the factory...
Those tree's are common , you should be able to pick up a cherry one cheap lot's laying around . If not I know where there at least 3 complete FX frontends to had for under $150 .
Going stock on the pri. or shiny ? Watch out for anything that has the name LifeLine on it , scrap metal out of the box new nothing line up for the starter or bearings so beware . Lot's of new and used chrome pri. out by them so ask or look before you buy , everybody has been stung with one and will try to pass it on .
