Default Early or late model???

Sorry to impose on the forum but need someones help. I wish to rebuild the transmission in our 1976 FLH, stock 74 motor and its the stock 4 speed however the rebuild master kits come in two flavours, early 76, and late 76 ............... how do I tell if mine is early or late ???? apparantly there is quite a difference in the kits and have no desire to purchase the incorrect one.

Thanking everyone in advance for any help sent this way.

Ride Safe.

You sure about that? I have a 1977 FLH and it has a 4 speed. I don't think the MOCO came out with a 5 speed until the 80's. I believe the difference in the early and late 76 trannys was an internal design change.

Early countershafts had the loose individual roller bearings, shaft is grooved on one end and threaded on other. The later used caged brgs, had grooves on each end plus threads on one end.The diameters of shafts are different-around .005-.006"Your are going to have to look at countershafts to be absolutly sure.

The early 4 speed had the loose rollers in the out-put shaft. The late 76 and up had the torrington bearings. That was the main difference. The 5 speed didn't even come out until 1980..Hawgley.

I would like to thank you all for your input, I now understand from this thread that I have an early model transmission as I have loose needle bearings .. like 88 of the things ...

Thank You All
