I have a 1980 Classic FL 1340 with a 4 speed. It's pretty much all original with 6,900 miles. The electrics have been upgraded in 2003. The mufflers are opened up. Now I'm getting some carb backfires at idle and going down the road. It helps if I leave the choke on a little. My question is can I rejet the carb to fix this or would it be better to replace the carb? If I should replace the carb what would be a good carb to get?
Sounds like an intake seal is leaking , get some brake cleaner use the red tube and while at an idle shoot a little cleaner were the intake meets the heads , stutters or dies you found the leak . Those where a decent carb set up and adjusted right . Check this link , a bit long but detailed info in plain english . May save you $400+ on a new carb you don't need .
