Default clutch/wiring

Hey everyone, just bought my first bike, an '81 fxe, and have decided to try and do all the maintinence and repairs myself and I have a couple questions. The wiring is a mess and have decided to re-do it all this winter before I have serious problems with it, the question is.........do I have to go with a stock harness or can I go with a more "modern" one (I would like to upgrade some of the lighting and the dash panel). I also need to replace the clutch and the question I have here is .......... how big of a job is it, am I getting in over my head trying to do this, and are there any specialty tool a person needs to do this.

Default RE: clutch/wiring

Get thee a service manual, preferably a factory one. Build your own harness; it'll be cheaper and probably better than the import ones I've seen. Manual will have a good wiring diagram. Replacing clutch plates is pretty easy. Special tools needed can be easily fabbed up (large flat washer & extra adjusting screw nut to use as a clutch spring compressor), unless you are going to pull the hub. Then get the puller, which ain't too expensive. And look into some clutch upgrades for it while you're at it. Maybe a 5 stud hub with The Big Fix rollers, or at least a Ram Jett retainer to cure the typical "tugging" associated with the 3 stud HD clutch hub. Also, replace the throwout bearing every year, especially if you ride much. They're cheap and easy to replace.
