I bought a 1982 fxwg It has both electric and kick start. starts pretty good with electric start. Today I thought I would kick it over you know to impress the old lady. Didn't work out like i had hope. either I don't know what I'm doing or something is broken. I turn the switch on, two twist of throttle, bike in Neutral. push pedal and felt no resistant. I thought maybe It should be in gear. try that with clutch lever squeeze and The bike moved forward as I push on the kicker. Didn't think that was right. figure I leave it alone for now till someone can tell me how to do it. Please help this dummy kick start his Harley. Thanks in advance..
Lol! After you push it with no resistance push it slowly til you find some the let it spring up and romp it. Careful not to launch yourself. Yeah not in gear is a good idea.
Give this a shot....With the ign. off, give her three prime strokes, turn ign. on pump kicker till you can feel compression stroke, then give her a swift kick.
If your ignition has been replaced with an aftermarket ignition...your kickstart may not function at all...many ignitions require 2 revolutions before it fires to make electric starting easier.
Thanks everyone, I try all that was stated above and was able to start it in 40 degree weather on 2 kicks. That Put a big smile on my face. probably keep smiling until the first time I get launch over the bars than I'll go back to using my thumb as stated above. Thanks again
Try this remove the derby cover bike in neutral then kick see if the clutch basket is turning as you kick it through If it is not turning you might have a sheared key inside the trany kicker cover on the gear that makes the mesh with the trany mainshaft
I used to be able to push the kicker through by hand on my old shovel so unless the bike wasn't running in the first place I wouldn't worry about that . Sounds like you need a good tune & carb check , a little tweaking to get it all right she go first or second kick everytime .
