Default kicker help

I need help. I have a 1967 FLH, pretty much original. I am having kicker problems. last fall my kicker would just free wheel through a stroke. Not engaging the motor at all.( electric start works fine.). I took it apart an all looks ok. But for the life of me I can not figure out how it actually works without gears grinding or the ratched gearconstantly clicking. I have the HD service manual and the HD parts cataqlog. I do al the work on the bike myself. But this I can not figure out...Spring has good tension..no loose parts or pieces of parts floating around..So how does it actually work?.......help would be appreiciated after you all stop laughing
