Default Shift lever

Is it usual to have a lot of slop in the shift lever arm ? its the one with the grease nipple on it . If not how can i take the movement out the bolt that retains it is tight . any advice gladly recieved ! 1980 fxwg

A little not a lot. Sounds like it's time to replace the bushing and or the shift arm....

Yah they rattle around like a cheap hooker most times , some times you can shim things a bit with orings or plastic washers but it's always temp thing .

Cool thanks for the advice i have had problems shifting down when at a standstill and i think the slack in the various linkages is the culprit it all needs a bit of therapy ! thanks again

May want to ck primary chain adjustment and or switch to synthetic in the primary. Is clutch freeplay adj correct? This along with previous suggestion will help neutral to 1st engagement

Have recently adj the primary chain as the comp sprocket came loose ! but will go through clutch checks and check primary and trans fluid levels many thanks

i have the same problem. what i found is a modified lever. it is mounted on a bearing in stead of a bushing. i will ask today if its a do it yourselfe modification or one you can just order. i will com back to you on it.

I have the same issue,have to play wit the shifter to downshift and up into 2nd,I replaced the bushing put in another washer seemed tnice and tight until I rode it,,pain in the *** to replace too,as the whole primary has to come off,so keep us posted on your fix,thanks

That should be a "cowturd" top, right? Does it still have that "V" linkage in the middle thats bolted to the tranny case? If so, pull that "V" linkage off and hook it directly from the foot shifter to the shifter shaft on the tranny top. That linkage in the middle does absolutly nothing but irritate people when it wears out. Your tranny will be more positive in it's shifting, and as a bonus, it works really good with a air shifter!
