Default oil level ?

always something ODD, but man,, i really do like this 84 shovel...
.
changed the oil today,,
again,,just bought this machine this year and am just now getting it on the road,,,,

"documentation" says,, 4 quarts, with filter..
drained out 3 quarts from the oil tank and filter....hmm...
and per the "documentation", i put back 4 quarts.

before draining, the dipstick, (an after market one, with the temp gauge on top), only has a "mark" midway up the "stick" and that's about where the old dirty oil line level was...
.
anyway, change the oil and filter,(decide on a straight 50), put in 4 quarts, drove it around the block and was surprised to see the oil tank FULL,,, i mean the oil is at the brim,... seems very odd?
of course the oil level on the "dipstick" is at the top near the rubber.
again,, seems odd that the tank would be that full ?

what i've heard is that on these old beast, ya check the oil with the machine sitting on the stand, which definitely tilts it to the left,,,is that correct?
.
I'm way past being embarrassed asking simple question, ...so, here we go!
1) how do you check the oil on an 84 Electra glide shove-head?
2) how much oil is required on a oil and filter change.
3) how much oil should be in the tank?
..
thanks for the help!
I need this machine right!
..
marion..

Did you crank the bike and run it before you drained the oil? Sounds from your description, that bike had "sumped" ( oil drained past check-valve in oil pump)...leaving only 3 quarts to drain out...and one quart in the engine case...you put 4 in and cranked it...now you have 5 quarts in the oil tank....does that make any sense?

Yep , there's always about 1/2 a quart or more that doesn't drain , either still in the lines or crankcase . Always run the bike the day your changing the oil and warm is the best time you'll get more out that way and then start with 3 qts and add as needed after you run her again . DO NOT RELY on the dipstick alone to tell you it's full or not .

50 wt is fine if its like in the 60's -- if your in the 80's 60 wt would be better -- this time a year i run 70 wt in new orleans --- next oil change i'll mix 70/60 -- i have a remote oil filter and a oil cooler mine takes 4.5 qts - that in tank stock filtr does NOTHING its pure junk.. i use this --- http://www.masclassics.com/vtwin/0699.php -- the # 40-0100 -- fits behind the kick stand bracket -- its clean and looks good and WORKS

thanks everyone for the advice,,,

appears that i need to drain bit until it is about 1/2 way up the dip stick (after it's warm), and tilting left on the stand.

the ol 84 was hot before i changed the oil, so does that mean that there (may-be) an issue with the check valve in the oil pump? I'm not familiar with the "sumped" concept, and its consequences or affects on engine performance or just general health of the engine. do i need to troubleshoot that issue further?

oh, it does have an oil cooler up front on the frame too.
oil gauge read around 150 when i changed the oil.
.

Myself,I drain when warm,,then add new oil and filter, undo return line on tank, hold that line into a small container, run bike for a couple min,top up as needed, and this pumps old oil out of motor and lines, until color of new oil,,I do this every couple of oil changes.
