There are many of you that have MUCH more experience with engines than I. So, my question is, are the below steps dangerous to the engine, or a more common procedure that others actually use?
Flushing the oil system and changing oil
a. Run engine to operating temp 170-220 degrees
(rocker boxes too hot to touch)
b. Drain oil (Do not replace oil filter at this time)
c. Place new flush mixture (Diesel gas at a 1 to 1 ratio mixed with normal cheap 10-30w oil) in oil tank
(a total of 2 qts of fluid should be in the oil tank)
d. Run bike for 1 minute
e. Drain oil, Discard
f. Place new flush mixture in oil tank
g. Run bike for 1 minute
h. Drain oil, Discard
i. Place new flush mixture in oil tank
j. Run bike for 1 minute
k. Drain oil, Discard
l. Place 2 qts of 10-30w oil in oil tank (no Diesel)
m. Run bike for 1 minute
n. Drain oil, Discard
o. Change oil filter
p. Fill oil tank to proper level (according to Maintenance manual)
with oil you will be using for the riding season (high quality oil)
q. Run bike for 2-3 minutes, check and top off oil tank as necessary
r. Oil flush and change is complete
Why? not being a smart a$$ but why would you do that unless something contaminated to oil in there.....I have seen some drain the oil and then start the motor and allow it to run for 20 seconds...pumps some more oil out, but I nave have...
I've seen those mechanisms on the internet for completely draining the oil/sludge and didn't "understand" if completely cleaning out the system really made a difference or not.
I would not introduce diesel or anything else into the engine. You can't get all of the old oil out unless you use the scavenger oil change system or something like it. I have installed one of these on my bike and it get all the old oil out. Is it really nessecary? I don't know, but it surely won't hurt!! After all, dirt is one of the main things that wears out an engine.
I change all fluids every 2500 miles...overkill?..yes...do I worry about getting EVERY drop out?...NO...anyone who would put the diesel-gasoline-motor oil 'slop' in their engine and run it ...is... an idiot...JMPO...:>)
