Are you using a factory manual or a Clymers? The factory manual is very clear on how to replace the rear belt. The front pulley and clutch, clutch basket and hub have to come out. The starter has to be removed, and then the inner primary comes off. Then you remove the rear fork (swingarm), feed the new belt in and reverse the process. This is the short story with a lot of details left out. Most of us use a impact to remove the front pulley nut, and the nut that holds the clutch hub is a reverse thread (turns right to come off). Did that help?

Try shovelhead.usa forum. That's how I learned. You can use 50' of 1/4" nylon rope stuffed in a cylinder to prevent the motor from turning. Make sure to leave a foot outside...duh.

I would avoid using an impact wrench because of hearing too many tales of damage to the crank and wheels assembly.

The only motors I'm aware of with problems relating to impact guns hurting crank shafts apply to 07 and later cast crank shaft Twin Cams.

You certainly won't hurt an 83 Shovel with one.

BTW, I've never seen an 83 with a primary belt ( stock.) This must be an aftermarket set up?

For my pans and shovel I have always used an impact to remove the primary and motor nuts (remember clutch nut is counter). Can say I have never seen any proof of the "damaged crank and wheel assembly"....not disavowing it, just saying that in my time on/around HDs I have never seen it. Outside of that you need to use some type of bar between the primay and drive sprocket to lock the two and a breaker bar.

I use a old promary chain tens. shoe cut to fot in the chain and sprocket. Impacts do have a tendencie to shake the magnets loose on the roter....
