Is it jumping out of gear after you think you have it firmly in gear? If so, sounds like a fork, or the shifter dogs on the gear is wore out. With everything you describe, sounds as if your tranny is wore smooth out. You are putting bandaids on all the little cuts. A rebuild is not that expensive.

Sloppy linkage is a given on shovels and doesn't hurt as long as the hard parts in the tranny are doing their thing correctly . Like Al said may be time to take a look see . 4 speeds are an easy & fairly cheap rebuild . Winters about there in your neck of the woods sooo ...................

Every rotary top 4 speed I have had, you had to lift your foot off the peg to shift it...so you may not even have a problem... you can't pussyfoot around with them, you have to shift them hard...you will never get it to shift like a more modern transmission.
