Default New owner of a 1982 FLH

Hey guys, new to the forum, new HD owner. I have recently bought a 1982 FLH Electra Glide Police Special. I need the rundown for these models if anyone knows them specifically. I've been on forums before, and if you're one of those a-holes that dont like 'greenhorns' then keep the comments to yourself please.

The motor is in great condition with only 18k original miles on it, but the last owner had neglected this classic a bit. So I will be breaking down the bike and putting her back together this winter.

Having said that, I have already encountered a problem. When I hit the electric start, it will engage, but the motor does not turn over, but when the start button is released (here's the problem) the starter doesn't disengage? I have to disconnect the battery to get it to shut off. PITA!!! Between my father and I using our general knowledge of mechanics, we took the switch apart, nothing. I bought a brand new relay, nothing. I bought a new solenoid, nothing. I switched the wires on the solenoid thinking maybe the owner before me switched them by accident, nothing. I have already grown frustrated, but I am trying to be patient here. Mind you, the bike has kick start also, so when/if I need to, I can start her right up, usually with 1-2 kicks!

Can anyone help me out here?

K, first, folks on this forum...especiallly shovel and pan section are pretty lenient and understanding about folks and their old iron, so please refrain from the cavaets on attitudes. We were ALL there once!

Second, ya gotta post a pic..or tw0, or three of the new ride.

Third, on the starting problem...starting system consists of the handlebar mounted button, battery, ignition switch, relay, solenoid and starter motor. You replaced, relay solenoid and inspected button, all good. Have you checked the hard cables from the solenoid to the battery and from the solenoid to the starter motor? Any chance that one (or both) are somehow grounding out and causing the problem. If the cables are good it is time to pull the starting motor and check for grounds. You pull it you can take it to a reputable shop that deals in small motors and have it bench tested.

Oh and welcome to the forum.
