As of late I am hearing a whine when I start the bike. Ultimatly the bike will start but the duration of the whine continues to get longer before the starter actualy ingages. I am sure it is only a mater of time before all I get is the whine and the starter does not engage at all. Any ideas whats happning?
don't let it whine, that is the motor winding coil heating up and it'll burn up, requiring a new starter ( $$ !)
it is whining as the starter is not getting enough power to quickly turn the motor over.
1. remove and clean battery cable connections ( both ends, both cables) while looking the cables see if the cable has degraded inside the insulation--- look for powder ( oxidized metal) coming out when you tap it.
make sure the battery is holding a full charge- take it to autozone for a load test
2.) starting the bike, turn it on and "flick" the starter button- wait a sec, then start the bike
the reason is this: a motor always stops on the compression stroke- flicking the switch will either push the piston past Top Dead Center, or cause it to slightly rebound- in either case the piston has some room to build up momentum before compression hits 100%.
Post back with any results- operators are standing by.
BTW the solenoid switch is exactly like a chevy* and easy to service.
in most cases any problems are caused by carbon on the disc, it which case you just clean or replace it.
Do replace ( or turn it over -on many designs the solenoid disc is same each side) if the solenoid disc has pitting from the contacts arcing
arcing/carbon is caused by poor connection, usually by low battery voltage
when it gets really bad the solenoid will "chatter"
easy fix if that seems to be related

* like a chevy and if you haven't fixed one, throw a rock in any direction and you'll hit someone who has- ask them to look over your shoulder
took the starter cable off and cleaned the ends of the cable and the starter stud, Found the plastic sheathing had melted and was insulating the cable from the starter. Once it was cleaned off it started every time, no whine. thanks again for the info.
