Hey, I'm trying to get some information on a clutch issue my dad has on his 79 lowrider. He's having trouble shifting into neutral unless the bike is rolling, and even then it's still difficult. He's put all brand new clutch plates in and the problem still exists. Any ideas on where we can start looking? I really want to go out riding with my dad, but he's been working on this issue for over 2 years now.
First off, this is a common problem. Go to your FACTORY shop manual and insure the clutch is adjusted properly. Many times this problem is due to a bad cable. The cheap *** chinese cables have stretch, even being new. Get a heavy duty cable from an American maker. A Tamer will also help cure your problem.
... and take a look at the clutch basket ... sometimes the clutch plates will wear "notches" in the "fingers" that are cut in the basket ... they can keep the plates from operating smoothly ... just a thought ....
Is your dad adjusting according to the manual? Found wiyh my shovel it takes a bit of fine tuning for some reason. My pan w/ mousetrap seems a heck of a lot easier.
That being said, in addition to what has been posetd (cable stretch and stud wear) when was the last time you checked to make sure the pressure plate is not warped? Other thing to check is to make sure you have the right amount of slack in the primary chain.
Think the boof mentions it but all the adjustment need to be done when the bike is stone cold...like in sitting overnight before you start adjusting.

Mine was notched to junk and was replaced.
+1 on a cold adjustment
Only thing I'll add here is watch the pressure plate as it moves in & out when you work the clutch cable , make sure it's traveling out evenly all round not one side more or less that the other . Springs loose tension in the clutchs and the pressure plate will drag on one side , does this you drop the plate off and swap the springs around till it equals out . Real common and real overlooked when everybody gets stuck on the details of the adjustment measurements , book adjusting measurement may dead on but the plate itself not moving in & out right .
