I have owned a few motorcycles, but this would be my first HD. It is a 78 FLH. Has a 96ci motor with S&S heads and all. Also S&S oil pump. Revtech 5 sp trans. Belt drive. I think most of the problem areas are addresses with the speed parts, but is there anything to look out for with one of these?
Sounds like the " workmanship " is what to look for since everything has been redone. is the wiring ok or has it been half ***'d. Are there different bolts all over it or they all look uniform. Over all has it been done right. Any invoices on the motor or who built it.
Just my thoughts.
Wow you sure do have a piece of HD history, that bike is very rare. Some would say don't ride it. Where did you find that bike ? Becareful the other side might say you are a racist for those decals as they quit making HD producing more than the 200 or so

It's been my only bike for 15 years, you got to ride what you got. Found it in a horse barn, took me 5 + years to find out what it was. Flags just seem to bring out the rednecks more than anything. they made 350 confederates total production. 228 super glides like mine.
Sorry for the thread jack!

Yep you about covered the tells , I'd find somebody that has a clue about performance bikes and shovel experience would greatly preferred on that one to go look it over with you .
Your gonna have issues to deal with a street motor that big and there's going to be lots of things done and aftermarket parts & treaks to get things to play together that are not stock nor covered in any manual . With what little you've said the bike is going to be a one off build with lots of odd stuff that can be a real bear to a new guy or most shops today for that matter . Personally unless your good with tools , know some in depth stuff about old shovels of have buddies who do bikes that one may not be a good choice for a first harley .
Got a few things I need to work on. Doesn't have a key. Just a bush button start so I'm changing that. No speedo. Tach works though. Also thinking about different handlebars. Just wish it were warm enough to ride it!
