Default Need some help on FLH specifications......

I am looking to pick up an early eighties Shovelhead FLH. There are a few things very important to me that are obvious when looking at Craigslist picture, like footboards and dual exhaust etc. I am trying to wittle done my search efforts with a little extra knowledge.
1. When did rear drive belts start for FLH (it appears 1982 could go either way)
2. When did the oil filter become the spin on rather than in the oil tank? (once again it appears sometime in 1982)
3. When was the primary oil isolated from the engine oil? (was it as late as 1984 with the mid year clutch change?)

In a nutshell, I want belt final drive, spin on oil filter and can isolate the primary myself if need be.

Thanks.........................

FLH is the 4 speed bike so I will go from there. 4 speed belt drives contain a few parts that are very expensive to replace IF you can find them, and are very likely to need replacing on a used bike. Early spin on oil filters set-ups were brazed together and unlikely to have survived the shovels vibration. Primary separation was mid-year 84. The reason I state this is... it may be better to get what you want from the aftermarket rather than hunt for a bike that had it originally...just find a bike in the best condition, then you can and add what you want.

Thanks, I am looking at an FLHP, 1982 with belt and filter in the tank. 23,000 miles and always stored in a heated garage. I let you all know if I get it.

Not sure what you consider expensive or hard to find....rear belts are more expensive than chain but are still made. i changed mine out at 69K when i bought the bike but i have to say it really did not need it. Belt had no cracks or worn spots from what I could tell. Did just because I pulled the swing arm to check the bearing and figured since I had it apart I might as well do the belt. That is the one maintenance part that is definitely a bigger PITA as opposed to a chain...you cant just remove a link and drop the belt, you have to take off swing arm and inner. Clutch shell might be difficult to replace however. Outer primary for 82 and up rear belt drive has a deeper positioned hole for the starter shaft but aftermarket outer primary covers are still made.

Not sure what you say when you refer to the spin on assmbly units. Mine is sturdy as hell and I am only the second owner of the bike. I like the way it mounts and it is a heck of alot easier to change and no oil gets dumped on the motor or anywhere else...

This is stock and mounts off the rear tranny. Only weight is the filter itself and not likey to cause a failure from what I can see/detect...

Primary was not isolated until the evo models (rear chains were however on FLT/FLHT modles). Pretty simpe to do it if you decide...
