Newbie shovel stroker question.
Last Fall, while we were building a 4 3/8 X 3 5/8 stroker for my "Buddy", I felt pity for him and the XYL and took my precious "1st new AYTHING"...
my pristine 1983 FXRT off moth ***** after 12+ years with the agreement that he'd do some re-vamping/upgrading while he used it for commuting and an occasional weekend ride. He IS a certified HD Mechanic. One WAY too fun night in the hills and bluffs near my place in Guttenberg, Ia., we all hit the twisties for a few hours. My 113 HP Sachs powered Springer, my 97 Hp, 117 Ft LB Trike, a Buddies fresh 95ci @ 10.25 CR w/ heads and 211's, etc. etc. THE SHOVEL HUNG! IT's a stock except for a recently added High four ignition, extreme duty police service clutch, and my trusty old Rivera SU Carb and Python straights. She had 28,000 on the clock, never been over-reved (until then I am guessing), and next morning there came a deep, sickening hammering from the RH side of the bottom end... UGHHHH!!!
She needs a crank, gonna' stroke her. Here's what I have on hand for ingredients (I had planned on simply swapping in his "fresh" set of .040 over stock jugs fit with S&S Forged slugs, sticking in a V-Thunder 4040 cam and freshening up the lifters and heads). Seems the project got LOTS Bigger!
I just called LSR about making me a 2 into 1 pipe ($645), would you consider building the head pipes and collector for an FXR? I Like them pipes of yours!
Anyhow, I Have a new Vulcan lifter conversion kit with lifter blocks, tappets, USA Hydro units, and adjustable pushrods, the aforementioned V-THUnder cam (Duration: 242 in. 252 ex., timing: in. 17/45, ex. 50/22, lift 0.485). Perhaps a bit too short on the intake duration for a stroker of 92 inches? Also have a set of Andrews medium lift collers to accommodate the cam's lift, I traded an eBay BDL Belt drive with Cody (Of J&P Fame) to help me out the heads and I'd LIKE to install a set of S&S 4 3/4 inch sroker wheels with matching forged pistons (I Know, hog out the cases).
NOW I NEED HELP: I'd like to use my stock Jugs, maybe go .010 over, as the clearance with the frame on top is almost nothing. AM I stuck with a maximum stroke of 4.5 (or perhaps 4 5/8 inch) with the stock Jugs??? I hate to spend the $723 each that S&S wants for the 3 5/8, 0.200 taller jugs, and at 4 3/4 stroke I'd get 91.4ci and 9.0 to one CR with the S&S 2900, 3.5 inch stroker pistons, PN 11-0462 for .010 over (That'd be .070 on a 74, right?). $285 for pistons/rings and a resulting 9 to 1 CR with the 4 3/4 wheels
(or 8.25 CR if I used 4 5/8 wheels for 89ci, OR 8.0 CR and 86.6 ci with the 4.5 inch wheels). THAT's the extent of my knowledge on the subject; if I use my stock Jugs, what are my options? ?Should I consider heating the frame in several spots with the torch and "making" some headroom? Oh, and is that 4040 cam good for anything over 86ci??? NightRider.Com recommends the 4030 cam (longer 250 duration with timing at 22/50 intake, 50/22 ex.), leaving the stroke stock, going to 89ci with the big bore Jugs, and then concentrating on porting extensively. I am open for advice at this point.
I know I'm asking an awful lot here, but thanks in advance!
