i have a 1974 FXE th was previously converted to an FL bike.
An FL dual exhaust was fitted however the original FXE shifter still there and now the shifter rod hits the dual exhaust crossover exhaust pipe.
Seems the ratchet shifter on top of transmission needs to be in the inverted position.
Is this a major task??
Would changesbe required to the forward linkage to maintain my 1 down 3 up pattern?
What pieces might I need?
Thanks.
Jim
The FL shifter lever is pointed down as you surmised. To change it you need the dust cover and shifter shaft lever from a FLH. You have to pull the inner primary to reach the screws. They are usually staked in place to keep them from coming loose. Don't lose them because nothing else will fit. The pre 74 FX's had the same shifter drum as the fl but they shfted 1 up and 3 down as an FX. In 75 they got their own drum so they shifted 1 down and 3 up. If your's is shifting 1 down 3 up as an FX your tranny is probably not original. It will only take you a few minutes to get used to the new shifting pattern. After awhile you will prefer 1 up and 3 down. Much quicker getting up to speed.
