Only time you'll run into problems with the metal gaskets is when the rocker studs aren't seated deep enough in the heads and larger 3/8" ends are raised a bit keeping the gaskets from seating fully , that's also what causes the paper ones to go so fast too . Gotta be careful to torque properly , I end up having to repair pulled studs all to often from guys doing the old strong arm routine thinking more is gonna seal the leak .

studs are seated right and flush... metal gaskets will go in. I read they don't need to be re-torqued
Black and reds for the rockers with no sealants then

Yeah I'm thinking the prior owner of mine just muscled that rear rocker box nut too much...since it's easy to get to without pullin the seat. Or he just didn't properly torque it the first time around on the rebuild...although the rest of the stuff from the top end rebuild looked good according to the experienced eyes that helped me on that project.

for some reason teh intructions on my Cometiuc head gasked are for EVO-TC.
It says to torque in steps, with final torque of 42Ft-Lb.. and that's how I got it now.
shovels shoud be torqued anywhere from 65 to 75 Ft-Lb

which one is correct?

Head bolts on a shovel go 65 FT lbs and you do them in steps and crossed sequence , I start with 25 then 45 & last at 65 and then go round them twice at that setting .

That's exactly what the guy that helped me pull 'n replace mine had me do...round of 25, round of 45, round of 65. Then a few more rounds of 65 over the next few days.

fired her up!
sound from the exhaust is completely different!!!
Valves are a little too noise... set them with 2 different methods, but still noisy.
1-Dry lifters, advanced timing mark in timing hole, extend pushrod until lifter's spring is compressed, backup 1 1/2 turn
2-wet lifters in lowest position, extend pushrod until no play, extend further 4 full turns, wait 15min untill lifter drains, do other cylinder.
Will try 1/6 and 1/3 more turns

Any input?

Sorry bout that brain fart on my part . Did you by any chance shim the rocker arms ? Later shovels had a lot of slop from the factory and can be very noisy .
