Okay I've had the battery checked and refilled with acid, put it on and got a running read in the 12s so I guess my bike isn't charging. What would be the next thing you'd recommend checking?
Also if I continue to ride it shouldn't it drop below 12 as it dies or will it always read there.

Thanks

Thanks

Turned out to be a bad positive wire. Now it reads 13.6 and 14s when reved.

it's reading 14.20 with a small amount of speed but dips to 11 and other random lower numbers when running. Is that a problem or just the old shaky shovel.

Other numbers anywhere from 11 to 8.

Thanks in advance.

should be close to 14 all the time you may want to check the stator and if its pushing the correct amount it is probably your voltage regulator. FYI those usually go out in pairs. But since it goes to up to 14 i would guess the VR. Also you may want to check for the proper gauge of wire from the VR to the battery.

That's about where it is gonna be. These old shovels don't put out 14 when it's at idle. As soon as you rev it up a little jumps to to 14 right... if so you are golden.

One thing to note, i took dense foam and wrapped my battery housing and stuffed every loose inch of my oil bag to keep the battery from shaking around. It actually made the batteries last another 6 months. regardless, batteries don't seem to last much longer than a couple years in these bikes. The vibration and acid loss kills them off quickly.

Good luck

As far as I know, there were never plugs on the right side on a stock shovel. Its all aftermarket in an attempt to clear the cylinders better. Depending on where they got the kit to punch the new plug holes would determine the proper plug gap and number.
