Default shovel indentification

Hi looking for some help identifying what year and size of engine i bought. As there is some conflicting information. The number stamped on the left side of engine is ☆2H40**9H9☆ left two middle numbers out for security reasons. As far as the research ive done its a 1200 cc out of a 79 flh. But on a 74 ci i read it should have 10 cooling fins on the jugs mine has 9 wich would make it an 80". I had the heads off and the pistons have .040 on the top so would this be a 80" .040 over or a 74" .040 over. Any help would be great.

ya "CANT" go on the 10 fin 9 fin -- I have done several engines and like the one last summer- it had the thick base and 9 fins - it was a 74"

80"

3.497 STD
3.507 .010
3.517 .020
3.527 .030
3.537 .040

if you have the heads off measure the piston travel -- you can do it through the spark plug hole

Ok thank you i will measure while I have the head off. If it is a 74 .040 over what would then be 1240ish cc. Also am i right about it being out of a 79flh with those numbers.

I did a quick google search and the 2H & H9 indicates its from a 79 CLE sidecar. But I'm no expert for sure. Someone else will give you a better answer. I read somewhere that 79 was a strange year for serial #'s

The H9 translates to 1979, and the 2H indicates CLE, but there's a discrepancy... The factory manual says the 2H should be followed by 5 digits starting with 8. So the case number should read ☆2H80**9H9☆.

As mentioned, the '78.5 and '79 bike numbers tended to wobble from true...

There is no way a motor will have a CLE number on it. Look close at the numbers and make sure they are legit. Harley used strange number stamps. Here is what they should look like.

You may be mistaking an A for an H.

A 2A is a 1200 FLH. You can't go by the number of fins. The 78 and 79 1200 used the same casting as the 80.
