So after sitting for the winter here in Seattle i pulled the 78 Shovel head out and I have 2 questions.
1: Is it bad to run the bike with a totally dead battery? The battery was totally dead but because there are 0 electronics except the head/tail lights it starts fine with the kicker as always and runs fine.
2: When I fire it up and let it warm up in the driveway it leaves a light brown milky looking gear oil smelling puddle under the oil tank breather. I don't think it's oil but gear oil from the tranny witch has a breather right above the oil tank breather. So is my engine sumping or my tranny blowing out gear oil?

Thanks for the help.
1) It's never good for the alternator to have to charge a completly dead battery.
2) Sitting for the winter I would suspect engine sumping but check tranny level to be sure.
Have fun.

Highly unlikely that the trans is blowing out gear oil..warming up in the driveway...very likely that the motor is sumping after setting up for a while
you get lots of wet weather in the N West - remove the oil pump return line after changing the oil and run the motor till you get clean oil out of the return hose -- that will help keep it clean for a while
It definitely is coming out of a breather hose that comes off the top let side of trans.... Dumping on top of where the swing arm bolts on, then dripping down past oil breather....is it possible there is moisture in trans? drain and refill?
