Did the original fat bobs have rubber grommets for the front mounts? I'm having a hard time figuring out if there are grommets or not for the mid-70's fat boobies.
Yep, thats the way I remember it, bolt through tank tabs to frame bungs, no rubber washers and I used Loc-Tite red to avoid riding home with my knees holding a tank half in place
Caution //// DO NOT push them in and tighten the tank, space it out if you must - test install and make sure the wiring is away -- another issue to avoid
as i will crack the tank while your riding it
Gas poring on a hot motor at 60 MPH will get your heart pumping -- jz
I found a place that sells old chain guard grommets that are supposed to fit the older fat bob tank mounts...anyone heard of using such a system? I worked on a guys sporty once that had fat bobs and I recall he used thick washers on the rear mount. Is there a reason to use thicker washers on the rear mounts?
Put your rear mounting bolts in the bungs first, then shim the front mounts with washers. That will keep those rear bungs from cracking (which happens a lot from impropper install)
