Try a Bendix. I used them for years on quite a few bikes and never had any issues with them. If you can find one with an adjustible main jet, you can cruise through the mountains with ease.

X 2 on the bendix its only 38 MM but they are a great carb for a stock 74 inch shovel as that is exactly what the 70s shovels had new

converting any fixed main jet carb to an adjustable main is a snap they sell a kit just for that

My 70 Shovel (FLH) had a Tillotson stock. When did they start putting Bendixes on them?

Tillotson was very hard to tune. It was always the first part we junked on the early cone heads.

1971 was the first Big twin with one we keep a collection of them in the shop, both the bendix and the early keihin as they were the chopper go to carbs before the SU and the round mikuni came along, then S&S copyed the 1966 big twin carb and we got the L series before the super B

Default heads

I have a set of shovel heads that I took in trade for some work that I'll sell for $350. PM me if interested. They have new valves / valve job and have been bead blasted. The exhaust port on the rear head was bent on the lip from someone dropping it, but I welded it up and re-machined it. Let me know and I can get you pictures.
