FYI, the front rim on my '78 is the original rim. Big deal? Yep, when you consider that there is no additional radius on the rim which means that a flat tire will most likely result in the tire coming right off the rim. Certainly a big deal and quite dangerous if it happens. It doesn't have to be a complete blow out either.
The additional radius on newer rims (run your fingers just below where the spokes are secured to the rim) permits the tire to seat more securely. The original rim is flat, for lack of a better description, at the angle change.
It's been a good day. Fixed my front master cylinder leak.
Peace
How about a photo on what you are talking about. Harley used a drop center rim that was supposed to retain the tire better than the non drop center type that was common on aftermarket wheels in the 60's and 70's.
original Indain rims are considered Flat not harley
"Flat forlack of a better description". I'll take a pic and post it tomorrow. However, regardless of everything else said, the rim on my '78 Shovelhead WILL cause the tire to come off in the event of a flat while riding. There is definitely a .060 difference between today's tires and yesterdays rims.
