Default Help with understanding rim/tire sizes?

Hi,
I was checking out this link here http://www.hdwheels.com/Product.htmfor my rim and tire sizes. I have an 03 lowrider and was wondering if I want to go up to the 160 rear tire from the 150, do I have to use the 18"x 4.25" rim or will a 160 tire fit on the 16"x3" rim? I am sure Ihave to use the 18" rim for this but I just wanted to check on it. Now it says with no mods I can use these bigger tires or rims, is this true or is there other adjustments I am going to have to make to get it to fit on my bike? Thanks

Jason

I have a 160/60ZR18 Bridgestone radial on the back of my '01 FXDXT; fits fine on a 4.25X18" rim. The 18" offers a better selection of tires, I've found...we did shave down the strut bolt heads a bit to be sure, but I've put a pile of miles on, many two-up (on my second tire now) with no problems except an increase in traction and better handling.

It will fit with no mods,I wouldn't put it on the 16x3 though I would use the 18x4.5 (or you may have an accident). Good luck. Later.

No, an 18 inch tire will not work on a 16 inch rim. That's just silly!

16" is the diameter of the rim and 3" is the width. Thusly only a 16" tire will work on a 16" rim.

i understand the question as first of all - can i put a 160 on the 16 x 3 rim?
if you go to the avon motorcycle tire website, their 160/80B16 rear tire (avon venom) specs say that the min wheel rim width should be 3.5" for the 160 tire where the 150 can go on a 3.0" rim easily. perhaps another brand would go on the 3" rim and be safe, but it would probably be much better to go to a wider rim, so i would go up to the 17 or 18" wheel. that being the case, you can probably go to a 170 tire if the right brand. somewhere i saw a comparison and one tire brand's 170 was about the same width as another's 160. wish i knew where that was.

The Metzeler 170 is approximately the same width as the Dunlop 160 in the 17" rim size. Metzelers 160 is narrower than the Dunlop 160.

Here is a good link for you, it will tell you everything http://www.hdwheels.com/Product.htm. Just don't put a 160 on a 3 inch wide rim it will be dangerous. Later.

thanks dougsdyna.

it seems that there is a tire brand that is narrower than the comparative brands for the same number. i was thinking it was the avon line. they probably require the same minimum rim width, so even if they are slightly narrower, probably couldn't find that narrower 160 tire that still didn't take at least the 3.5" rim minimum width.
(i couldn't get the metzeler tire website to pull up the specs as to minimum rim width for a 160 tire on a 16" rim if they make one).

thanks for the replies, if I decide to go with the 160 tire, dont worry I noticed that it wont go on the 16x3 rim. I have been shopping around and found that the 18x4.25 rear rim is not that common in most web sites, is there any good sites for rims? Thanks

drdave, Metzeler does have a 160/80-16. Don't think they have complete specs on their website like they used to, but their '06 catalog said 3.5"-4.5"rim.[align=left]
Code:
 Measuring Rim(inches)PermittedRim (inches)
 160/80 B-16 (75H)3.503.50-4.50
