When hot the 74 has a slight knocking sound when I use a stethoscope on the pushrod tubes. All the others are quite but this is prounounced although you can t hear it without the scope. I was chasing down an upper end ticking sound when I discovered it in the front intake pushrod. The previous owner put all new rods and lifters in and the bike runs sweet with compression being 130 psi in both when hot so I have to think the rods are adjusted correctly. New guides and the seats were ground in the heads so I know that is ok. It is not a tick but a knock only in that one tube.
place your finger on the tube if you feel it hitting -- you will need to remove just a bit from the bottom of the inner alloy sleeve, as the front intake is the shortest of all the assemblies and is prone to hitting and the sound you described is just that
3 chrome pieces - the lower main body attaches at the lifter block - the center cup it has the spring and washer in it for the // Top snap clip that puts tenshion on the works
Then you have a top alloy tube it has no chrome and removing 1/8 if an inch is all it might need /// NOW if it is in fact hitting the push rod, a dent or bulge in the alloy top piece on its bottom opening will be seen - remove all that is damaged and it wont hit anymore
