looking into buying my first harley and found a 2000 road king that im very interested in but its got over 80k miles. its not local and i have only ever owned dirt bikes so i have no idea what problems to expect with a bike with that many miles even if i could go look at it. its coming from a dealer in another state and is described as super clean and perfect running.
if you were considering buying a bike with 80k without being able to see it in person what would you automatically expect to need replaced immediatly/soon? not including normal things like air filter, tires, oil.
it sounds crazy to me but i've been looking at bikes for days on end now wondering what i would like and as soon as i seen the picture it caught me and its all i can think about.

unless you are getting it dirt cheap, stay away from it. get something '09 or newer. lots of low mileage bikes out there for sale these days. middle of winter is a good time to be shopping.
I'm honestly not sure if its a God deal or not at $7,000. But its the only bike I've seen that I liked as is for under $10k and wouldn't need to dump more money into to make it what I want. I read somewhere I could get the whole motor factory rebuilt for about $3500 and I'm guessing it would cost a lot more than that to personalize another bike. Am I wrong in thinking that? I see it as spending $10k for a bike i love vs spending $10k on a fresh bike that i either have to learn to like or spend another $5k to personalize to like.
I have seen a few dynas I liked but with my size I'm not sure I'd be comfortable and would look funny on a smaller bike. I'm a bit worried about that and its definatly influenced my tastes. For instance I love the look of the orange xl883r roadsters but I'm not sure it would have enough power and pretty sure I'd look like a pittbull ****in a squirrel riding it.

man if it's what you like then go for it cautiously.
ask about any repairs and maintenance done to the bike. If it were me, I would ask if he would be willing to take it to local HD shop to him, have it inspected, and with a clean bill of health, you offer to pay for the inspection.
guess i dont have to worry about this anymore. wifey just informed me "if you EVER bought a purple bike i would leave your a$$" lol i really did love that 2 tone purple/silver road king though. i'm thinking i'd like a black one or even the 2tone black and silver. i've also been considering fatboys and dyna wide glides. in all honesty i dunno anything about the dyna models or what changes with each of them i've just seen quite a few of the wide glides i liked the looks of. the heritage softail and softtale customs have really caught my eye too
i cant wait to find the right bike when i have the cash in hand and be able to sleep again. i've been on the net looking at hd's for days and go to sleep and wake up thinking about what to get.
one other thing bugging me is i think i want a bike with 12-16" apes but im not sure how much that would cost to add to a bike between the bars, whatever cables, and all that. also im wondering if i bought a bike that already had big apes (seems if a bike comes with apes they are big apes like 16"+ ) if they would make it much harder to take the test with.
everyone says take a test ride but i doubt many people/dealerships are going to let a guy with a learners permit take a 10k bike for a joyride.
well there ya go! My wife told me the same thing about a roadglide. Really though I think what it boiled down to was the only RG i've ever liked was the black and white SE Roadglide and it's like $35k so I think it was more about spending that much on a bike vs what it looked like. So I ride an Ultra Limited.. LOL
As for the apes, I'm not sure about laws in other parts of the country, but here in Texas, I believe apes cannot be above your shoulders (or maybe it's a certain height above the seat, can't remember now) so you might want to look into that. Not saying that anyone enforces that law but nonetheless it's there. Supposedly apes are better for riding especially long distances because of the circulation in your hands, arms, and shoulders but I just can't bring myself to make that move as I don't really care for the looks.
