Default Tour Pak cable broke AGAIN!

I use my Tour Pak often but twice I had the cable that prevents the lid from plopping all the way open broke. The Tour Pak lid then drops to the side of my trunk and bends the hinge.
This bends the hinge. To remove the hinge you have to drill out the rivets. I can straiten out the hinge in a vice. Today when the cable broke it cracked my Tour Pak at the hinge. Not too bad.

The cable broke at the bottom piece.

The last time this happened was just under a year ago. I bought a new cable retractor from HD.
At least this time I had screws in place of the rivets.
Anyone else have a problem with this? I think I'll replace it with a chain. I'll have to be careful to pull the chain into the Tour Pak as I close it.

I installed the EGlides metal brace.
Expensive but it holds the lid better.
(I still keep my cable attached. Nothing else to do with it.)

It's a pretty delicate piece. Need to be gental with it on opening. Also not a good idea to let it hold lid open while bike is running. Not defending the part. It's a toss it in the garbage every couple years part. But if your on your second one...u already know that. Been posted before Lol

Wonder if one from the new bikes will fit on there, the newer ones seem to be built better, like a nylon strap instead of a cable.

Put back on the OE stationary cable! The retractable cable is to fancy for it's own good! Sometimes simpler is better!!!

Delicate piece? Be gentle? Don't leave it open when running? It should be able to handle regular use. The first time it broke I had a half helmet on the luggage rack. It should be able to hold that. What gets me is that when that cheap part breaks it breaks the Tour Pak. After the first one broke I have been very careful. Yesterday I carefully opened the Tour Pak and it broke and just flopped open.
Bumpandrun what do you use to hold the Tour Pak open?
Maybe I should get one of these:
I don't want a cheep part causing more damage elsewhere.
