and

This shows some CA laws,

Exhaust Noise Regulations: 1986-Current 80 dBA

What year is your bike? The '13 and newer need a CARB Sticker or stamp

"It is also important to recognize that any changes made to a motorcycle will have to be approved by the proper governing board in the state. Each exempt product is issued an Executive Order number (which can be verified on the CARB website) and any add-on or modified parts without this number will cause your vehicle to fail the visual portion of the Smog Check inspection. In addition, any motorcycle model that is dated 2013 or later or has an aftermarket exhaust system must have an official noise emission label from the Environmental Protection Agency placed on it before it can be lawfully operated or even parked in the state of California."

Remember, there is CURRENTLY no smog inspection or tests on motorcycles in California, but if a safety officer was so inclined, he could ticket you for not having an approved exhaust if your rig is '13 or newer. Odds are he pulled you over for other reasons though....

This article has a better take on the 2013 changes. if your bike is a 2012, by rights you should have bought the exhaust in 2012 if its non-compliant.

very few things are legal in cali and if it is legal its almost a stock replacementwith little to no performance gain. you will most likly be putting cali no no parts on your bike.

But for the most part, nobody cares. Like Maximus says, motorcycles aren't inspected or smog checked (yet). The only limitations I have seen is some retailers not selling to California residents. It just means you have to do a bit more legwork to find someone who will.

what he said....
My first choice is revzilla not only has great prices. They have price matched my orders no questions asked and i even got a price match after i received my current exhaust....i found it on sale for 190 less. you just have to put the parts on your "race" sporty

See post 5....I'd agree nobody or agency cares at this time.....unless it is too loud.

The noise may cause attention from the police and they may give you a fix it ticket.
So perhaps you may wish to keep your OEM pipes in your storage.

Lastly, just perhaps an aftermarket exhaust could cause warranty claim headaches for you. Do a search on this forum; maybe a rare situation.

Good luck in your install of a new exhaust and don't forget your Air/ Fuel tuning.

I'm in San Diego and I don't know anybody who has been stopped for loud pipes. Lots of guys riding around with straight pipes. They tried to enforce a noise law decades ago, but it just petered out. Too difficult to enforce, I guess.

What is your concern?

You don't have to SMOG the bike so pick a set of pipes you like and have a good time. Only trouble you might run into is that certain vendors won't ship CA illegal pipes to CA so you'll have to find a way around that.

Like the dude above me said, lots of people around here riding with straight pipes. I'm in OC.

Yeah, I too live in San Diego. My bike is a 2007 XL1200C Custom and I put V&H Q-series pipes on it. They are a lot louder that stock but not quite as loud as those short "sweeper" pipes. I have notices that most (never see one pulled over) LEO's don't even bother to pay attention to the sound of your pipes. That said, there is one exception, if you are sitting at a light and cranking it out really really loud. But then, that is just because you are too stupid to not get a ticket. If you see any LEO's just let it idle at the light and when it turns green just take off in a mellow fashion (not cranking it out into high revs) and all will be fine.
