Default Portland to SF on the PCH

We flew into Portland Friday night to be prepared to rent of EagleRider at 10AM Saturday morning. Having done everything on line, it was a quick and painless pick up of our 2 Ultras. One had NAV and a luggage rack, the other a radio only. Having a road king at home, I didn't bother with the radio much.
WE Left Milwaukie Oregon, took 99 north to I5 and across the Columbia into Vancouver WA. Back across and west on 26 to 47 down to McMinnville to the Evergreen Museum where the Spruce Goose is kept. Exploring the museum then heading west to the coast.

My pics are a little out of order so bear with me!
WE Rode down to Lincoln City for the evening. Normal hotel rate is 80 bucks, we got it for a little under 300! The staff let us know, lol. Got our first view of the Pacific around 5 pm. We made quick work thru Portland as the traffic was gnarly but looks like a cool town to hangout. The evergreen museum was worth it!

It was very warm in Portland but once we got along the coast, it got brisk quick. We did on the advice of the other couple purchase some Tourmaster electric vests. They were a life saver on the low 50 degree mornings. remember, we came out of 100 degree Texas!

That Bridge is an awesome sight from the Washington side isnt it?!

The Golden Gate will be ubber cool as well , just be well aware that once you get closer to San Fran. those cagers will be traveling at speeds in excess of 85 Mph. that was my experience back in 2009 at least.

Hopefully the fog either lifts by 9 am or there is none while on the PCH..I see you have electric vests and they will be welcome when in the Red Wood forest.

Oh, when you get to the Sea Lion Caves either hold your breath or stop up wind of them cause you can not miss the smell.

Oh and watch out for the Elk further South ..also in Orick, California there is a cool little Cantina that serves up a great salsa and a fantastic Huervos Rancheros .

Check out this place ''La Hacienda 121137 Hwy 101Orick, CA 95555 ,
Phone number (707) 488-2520

The State Park Employees call in their breakfast or lunch orders and there is a steady stream of customers and while it may not look like much from the outside it is a very clean establishment...just ask your significant other what the ladies room is like?
I'm sure she will tell you ...

Again this was in 2009 a family run place and very friendly too.
Enjoy !!

Rob

So, Having to do a work around on our hotel for Saturday night, we ended up in Lincoln City which was further south than we wanted to be.After dinner walk on the beach resulted in a seal sighting. He was swimming along the coast just enjoying the evening which was brisk! So, Sunday Morning, we got up and rode NORTH to Tillamook for breakfast the the Cheese factory, did the tour, and headed out to see our first of 2 lighthouses that we would visit. Then we took the Netarts scenic drive along the coast to hit 101 near Hemlock which we took south of course to Coos Bay for the evening. We stayed at the super 8 in Coos bay on Sunday night which was the lowest quality hotel we hit on the entire trip. We enjoyed German Food in Coos bay before hitting the sack.

The Palace Inn in Lincoln City actually invited us to park under the awning in case of mist or rain. Even the the price was jacked up, their normal rates are around 80 bucks. Not a bad stop, clean,

The other couple, RWC1968 and his lovely wife. Good people! We have traveled many a mile over the years.

Obligatory selfie with my wife, Jean. We celebrated our 28th anniversary on August 4th while rwc celebrated his 48th birthday on the 5th

Tomorrow morning I do a lot of what you did in reverse. I leave San Francisco and ride up to southern Oregon. My niece lives in Medford and I've done this ride a number of times. Seems like you had a good time. Happy for you. Come back next year. There is a lot of other nice rides in northern California.

Started the morning in Coos Bay Oregon. Wound down the coast, going up high in the mountains then dropping down low on the rocky beaches. Had lunch at a quaint but very good " Tea Room" in Brookings. Made a stop to take more pictures and enjoy the views. Crossed the Cali line and the terrain changed some and we rode into the Redwood Forest. Stopped at the Trees of Mystery and did the walk and ride. Then rode down to Klamath where we drove thru a redwood! Then down to the Newton Drewry scenic drive, back to 101 thru Arcata, Eureka and finally to Fortuna where we are dining at the Eel River brewery and calling it a day. Big day, big trees and big fun!

So we got up in Fortuna, hustled us up nice rooms at the Heritage Inn in Little River before we left, end enjoyed our ride down to Leggett, using the Avenue of the Giants for a good part of the trip.Once we reached Legget, we got off 101 and hit the legendary highway 1! We wanted to see the famous Glass beach in Fort Bragg as we moved down the coast. Do not stop there. Nasty and not as it seems online. Our first disappointment on the trip and really the only one but what a waste of time. But the Heritage Inn in Little River more than made up for it. It was located right on hiway 1 and had intimate views and their own beach right on the Pacific. We enjoyed our stay and spent a late morning there just exploring and relaxing!

from my facebook report
Easy mileage day! Ate breakfast and rolled down 101 to the entrance of Avenue of the Giants. Followed this road through to Phillipsville, stopping for photo ops. Back on 101 to Leggett where we fueled up. Here we hit California hi way 1. Twists, turns, climbs, downhill extreme. Loved it! Had the GoPro on for most of it and hoping to get some good pics from it when time permits. Finally hit the Pacific again where guard rail usage was kept to a minimum. Road was neat, narrow and twisty along the coast. We stopped for lunch in Ft Bragg , enjoying seafood on the wharf while seals played nearby. After lunch, we headed out to the famous glass beach which was disappointing. Moving on to Mendicino where we are staying at a great inn by the ocean with a view! No air conditioning put here but cooling rapidly as the sun sets!

still enjoying the Heritage in as the report follows

and our electric vest were so nice in the cooler weather. Having 1 native Texan and 3 transplants on this trip, we were shocked in the cool weather, especially in the morning. Plugging in was easy. I was the circuit carrier on my bike
