Thats a very subjective deal there, kinda like seats. Depends on your needs or what you consider to be comfortable? I use the Avon Custom Contours and love them. I dont like a bulky grip, dont like uneven/ribbed grips and thick rubber is out as well.
I have the performance machine contour...love em...I would have gone with Avon if I hadnt found a smoking deal on them...replaceable rubber too...chrome excellent
I hate when the rubber grips get hot and sticky, so I installed a set of black diamond Harley Aluminum grips. Very happy with them so far. Subtle but comfortable.
Metal gets too hot in the sun and rubber will degrade after a while. Nothing beats all leather. You get a good grip and they don't get hot or sticky. They may not look "cool" but they are comfy which is more important to me than looks.
For replacement, I would recommend these. I have had them on my 08 for many years and miles and still look and feel great.
Another cheap option that has worked well for me on my Limited was some simple padded leather grip wraps I found on Amazon. Sorry, no link but there are many to choose from. I went this route because the stock heated rubber grips were starting to degrade and get sticky. I liked the heated grips but didn't want to pay big money for limited selection ( no leather) from the dealer, especially sine the stock ones still worked fine, so I just covered the stock in Leather. Heat comes through just fine.
Harley black diamond here as well.....i always wear gloves so the feel of a soft rubber grip is lost on me.....now i wear shorts and tennis shoes a lot around town... safety first always with the gloves ; )
