Default XL1200C Front end swap, or, just options?

I have just bought a 2002 XL1200C Converted to a trike

The front end looks thin for my liking.

I have been looking at the 2017 Sportster 1200 and the front end looks nice and chunky.

Now...

The front wheel is a large thin thing, that is... What? 19 inches? Jeez!
Well the front wheel on the 2017 sportster looks a lot chunbkier, maybe even a 15 or 16" ( ok ok Im showing my ignorance here now - I could just look the specs up, but that wont help me at all, so... )

Anyway, my questions are simply these...

1a. Can I fit a chunkier wheel into my current forks?

1b. Any particulars?

2. Failing that, Will the front end of the 2017 Sportster, fit onto the frame on the 2002 one?

has this question been asked recently?

Thanks in advance.

A softail front end can be adapted to your 2002 frame easier than my wife's 2007.

Cool. so options there... I like that softtail chunky look... Thats the exact look I want.

Its now really down to multiple combinations of things, from the obvious price, but also the less obvious prices, if some of the smaller bits need to also be changed over, and also whether I can get some money returned on my current parts. It alls adds up of course.

Derfs picture shows a nice fat wheel. That may be all I need ( No, want, be honest ) and I have seen some nicewheels but those alone can take me over a grand FFS!

Certainly starting to see that these changes are certainly more the LONG TERM future investments rather than simply chucking a few quid at the bike to help make it look a bit nicer.

Thanks for these guys.

new 48 and roadster use the 49mm and 43mm tubes. 2017 custom and the rest are still rocking the wimpy 39s.

Ok, cool, so yokes are definitely on the shopping list.

Im actually gutted that only a year or so ago, I got rid of my SZR660

It had a set of U/D Forks that were extremely good. I also uprated the wheel to twin disc too.

Typical. That would have made a gorgeous front end.

But yes an extra 10mm wouldcertainly stiffen up the front no end.

Today, I checked the tyres. The pressure wasa tad low, but not enough to make the thign feel like the tyre was peeling off ,so, thats not the issue.

Ok, small update for what it is worth...

I am in talks with a place that does custom bikes thats semi-local to me... I dont know about advertising policy here as I am new, so I wont mention who it is, just in case, but if its ok and you want to know then I will of course say who it is.

But anyway, I have had a chat with them.

My bike is booked in for the 21st of August to have a front end re-do.

Now, in the meantime, another customer has gone in, asking for a thin front end done to his.

The guy at the shop clearly said hang on... and a bulb went off in his head and he thought of me wanting fatter.

So, what he has done, is asked me for a couple of pics of my front end, from the side, and the front and at 45 degree angle etc, so he can show the other guy, and he has asked the other guy for the same to show me.

Then, if everything goes well, we will do a trade... His for mine!

Now, whether this will also mean a few other little things needing to be changed, we will just have to see...

For example the bar that goes across my forks that holds the lights on, will have to be changed and so does the other guy have that? then ok, that will be a straight swap.

Whatever else of course, but if al lgoes well, I will have my front end done before the end of the month!

Sounds great. That's how things should always work out.
Hope it does in your case.
Does the VAT apply when you fellows trade things over there, or can you get away without getting double and triple taxed?

LOL Yes, the way we tax and get taxed is a little different to the US I recon.

Im not fully clued up to the finer details obviously with the US, because in the UK, we get taxed on our tax and so sometimes, its best to simply demand that they tell you what you will pay in the end.

For example, when we started talking about the priceof X and Y, he said that the used parts were ŁThismuch and new would be ŁThatmuch plus tax!

I said to him, that I dont care a monkeys about plus tax, just tell me the final osts if I went for it... I dont like hidden rubbish, you know...

The last thing I need, is for us to make a deal on getting stuff done for, say Ł2500, and then when it comes to paying him his Ł2500, he then says oh yeah, plus tax... In that case, he can FFFFFForget it.

When on the phone, we made a few preliminary options and he could do what I asked for under Ł1000

When I went to the shop, he wasnot there and the lad I spoke to, talked abotu a different option, kind of putting me off the wider wheel, and just widening the Yokes.

It would be a raction of the cost sure, but it does not do what I want, and so I talked to the owner again and then he came back a few dayslater with the swapsies option.

There is no talk about tax, there is no need.

MR BIKE wants my front end.
MR ME Wants his front end.
MR SHOP is going to do it.

No VAT no TAX, no silly extras, just a job done and as I said, providing things all go well, we wont need to buy any extra stuff.

If we bought the extra stuff, if its new then yeah, VAT will be added to it.

---

I think in the UK everything you buy already has VAT on it.

If you are trade then you can either get the VAT knocked off, or if you pay cash for a job, then again, the seller can knock VAT off, or if you ar etrade and buy from a tarde shop, then the VAT may already be off, but in all honesty for most people, its a non issue to be honest.

Not everything here is taxed, however it is true that if it is, then it is normally included in the advertised/selling price. It's better than in the US where you can innocently see home-made cookies in a family-run filling station, for example, at a dollar each (or whatever), decide that looks great, but then get asked for a dollar seven cents! Daft.
