I have a 2011 Ultra Classic and the cable on my retractable tour pack cable frayed and snapped off next to the bottom swivel unit this weekend and it caused major damage. The lid went completly back and it broke away from the bottom of the tour pack breaking two large pieces away around the hinges. I have the chrome HD hinges on the tour pack and they are far stronger than the stock and did not give at all. The bike is still under the two year warranty but after taking it to the dealer today; the verdict is still out if HD will cover the damage. I have always had a concern that the cable was very thin compared to the stock cable that came on the bike. My recommendation to anyone that has one of these units on their tour packs.....take it off today and throw it in the trash as soon as possible. I have an 01 Road King as well and I have a detachable tour pack for it and the stock cable for the lid looks as good as the day I put it on the bike over 10 years ago. Hopefully, I will have good news from HD tomorrow, if not, I will certainly let you all know.

Man that really sux.
I have my original cable on, but intertwined it with Parachute cord for a back up if the cable ever came disconnected or broke.
Hope it works out for ya.
I'm about a month late - teather broke today. Bent the hinges as well - bent those back, but am looking at the new hinges.
Is there anything other than the HD teather cable?
I would go to Home Depot or Lowe's. They have various sizes of coated cable, plus the hardware to put it together. I'm a master at putting cables together with the number of dogs I had over the years lol.
The wife bought me a retractable tether for Christmas a couple of years ago. One look at the cable diameter and it turned into a retractable key chain. No way that skinny piece of junk was going on my bike. This was just after the original larger dia cable had let go.
