If you are headed North on 495 in Massachusetts, you will NOT hit tolls, as it isnt a toll road.
However, at certain times of the day, you WILL hit traffic. Going north, mornings during the week, from roughly 7 until 10, at the Lowell Connector (exits 35 A B C), you can have traffic backed up. Sometimes for a mile.
A month ago, in the southbound lane, there were two bottlenecks due to road construction. The first one was at the HN/MA border, the second one just north of Lawrence. Given that this is MA, the construction may or (more likely) may NOT be finished. I hit this after 7 PM, so it COULD be night work only.
I am just off 495, exit 30. PM me if you'd like to meet up. I'm less than 5 minutes off the highway. Enjoy your trip!

Heading south, take 84 to 81. Pick up 95 south of D.C. Less stress,NO TOLLS.

If everything goes to plan I should be driving by that exit early morning on Labor day. I'm leaving Portsmouth, NH at 7 AM.

Going south, thats about an hour ride, maybe less. Shouldnt be too much traffic that day. There is a nice place for breakfast, Pauls Diner, in Westford, right off 495. Exit 32. I would highly recommend it

EZ Pass does not cost anything in NY. You just need an account linked to the pass and keep some money in it to pay for your tolls. The pass itself is free and this saves you time at the booths.

Either going northbound or southbound...this will probably be your best route to avoid NYCity...pretty ride to boot....

If you want to see the U.S. as it really is, DO NOT miss I-95 from Washington DC to Boston. And get an EZPASS at a service area, it will save you untold $$ and aggravation.

On the other hand, if you want to enjoy the ride, do whatever you can to AVOID I-95 and take state or even secondary county roads, you will be glad you did.

Nothing to add to the route but I wish you well with the endeavor!! I doubt there are many who would say that 550 miles over multiple (or even single) days is not a huge ride

Be safe and have fun!!
