I have an 02 Hugger 883, this morning I noticed it took me an hour to get to work with one quick stop..... most days it takes me 40 or so on the bike but when I drive my truck it's 30 minutes and maybe 40 with a quick stop. I just started riding and this is my first bike so I go no more than 5 over the posted speed.
So not only did it take a long time this morning, but I get passed by EVERYBODY even in a 25 mph school zone....
Any quick things I can check first before having it serviced?
If it takes you 30 min. in the truck, and an hour on the bike, you were going twice as fast in the truck. Another way to put it is you were halfassed on the bike.
While being half-assed might seem logical to you because I'm new, I assure you I didn't go twice as fast..... you see there are alot of cops on my way, so 64 in a 55 is max in the truck and I was doing 60 on the bike. I'm new, not an idiot
#1 Welcome to the HD Forum.
#2 Good info here, but also some joking, So put your Big Boy pants on.
As mentioned in another thread you started, A GPS, Smart phone App, or a friend riding along can answer the accuracy issue. It's not uncommon for a HD speedo to be off 5% or so. If tire size is not stock there is additional error.
#3 - #20 don't get offended by replies, Heck they haven't even mentioned Sportsters yet.
the electronic hd speedo is very accurate IF you have stock setup. now if you changed gearing, then you need a recalibrator. i run a international gear with johnson engineering sport gear so i have to use a badlands speedo recalibrator. when i drop third, i have no speedo left. at 5k, the speedo is pegged out and still 2.5k to go.

Yep. Also I don't see any speedo as the Lab instrument some folks do. The reading error alone, on an analog scale, can be +- 2.5 %. Cops don't stop you if you're within 5% of the limit anyway. You can set your cruise control to 110 in a 100 K zone or 120 in a 110 k zone and breeze past the cops all day long. It won't get em off their honey glazed doughnut.
Nobody pays much attention to their car's speedo. Why the obsession when it comes to bikes. I bet you couldn't find 5 people on this entire forum who have "honestly" ever been ticketed for speeding and it came down to speedo error, modifications included. "Don't get me going on fuel gauges".
Thanks, I got thinking about what you said about the pretrip I hadn't taken that into consideration, I was late for work and I only live 30 minutes away... lol
the bike had custom exhaust on it so it may not have been done right.
I went faster , and kept up with traffic more.
thanks for the input. Didn't know if there was an easy way to check but these were all good things to consider first.
