Sounds like the DEI Titanium wrap. I had that on my pipes last year.
It still gets damn hot. I can't confirm because I have forwards but prolonged contact with a rubber sole will probably still melt it.
The Titanium wrap os extremely easy to work with. As far as partial wrapping goes, I've never tried it but don't see why it wouldn't work. You'll just have to be extra mindful of folding under the cut ends to prevemt fraying. You'll also need very good (tight) straps to keep them in place. The titanium stuff is kinda slippery...like silk sheets...

right on, I have the stainless straps but cant find the damn things, doesn't help I just moved from the city to over an acre in the country(desert) and dont know where half my stuff is
