Default Wheel bearing damage. New rear hub needed?

Hi folks,

As per the thread title, took my rear wheel off originally to get access to some wiring to sort an intermittant issue with my brake light. However, due to some recent difficulty with getting the rear axle to slide easily out of the back wheel, I decided to have a closer look at the bearings and see if there was an issue.

It turned out one of my bearings had collapsed and was causing some binding. Not enough to cause any massively noticeable change in riding, although I had noticed a recent tendancy for the bike to want to steer to the right slightly from a standing start. I think the damage must have been very recent.

Anyways, I removed the old seals and timken bearings (havent got round to the races yet) and had a look inside. The hub bore on the drive side looks to be quite bashed up but I dont know how much this is likely to impact the rideability if I put new races / bearings etc back in the wheel. Im not adverse to buying a new hub but if this one is still useable...

Am I cooked?

Default Not a biggie

Everything rides on the bearings in the races. Internal of the hub isn't really involved outside of keeping it together and sealed up via the seals on each side.
Do the bearings and races and do a good job on the endplay and ride it.

Thanks Griz, I was hoping that might be the case. I guess il not know for sure until I fit the new races and bearings and see how they sit in there. Hopefully no slop!

I replaced my stock bearings every other tire change.
I used All ***** then switched to Timken.
With the Timken 205PP Deep groove you can expect a lot more usage between changes.

Put them in the freezer overnight and they will install easier.

He shouldn't even try to use the 205PP . Those are Sealed ball Bearings (2000-later). He uses Tapered Roller bearings

.

Maybe I'm overly optimistic, but in my experience if you keep bearings greased they will last practically forever. (aka, I don't think replacing bearings on schedule is a good idea, except for sealed bearings. I'll be curious to read what others say).

Evo era bikes had tapered roller bearings. Different setup entirely.
