Two "Sportster" questions ?

Two "Sportster" questions ?
Hi to the Sportster section,
my German friend Sigi from Brandenburg is interested in an older Sportster, and he has two questions:
1. From what point onwards was an electric starter motor installed or available?
2. Until which year was the gearbox shifted on the right side of the motorcycle?
Since I cannot answer his questions clearly, I would appreciate your kind advice, thank you very much!
Sigi used to ride BMW chopper, and in later years a 1937 U Flathead, which he restored himself to original condition.

Thanks for your advice, unfortunately our friend doesn't speak English.
He rides a Royal Enfield and is thinking about an older Sportster.
I fondly remember how we tinkered with his 1937 U Flathead in the 1970s/1980s, unforgettable.
Long ago, no spare parts in sight, and one day the old mill spewed out its first sound...
