Your manual should show you how to remove the pins from both sides of the connector.

Hill Country Customs Apes for 800 with bars, controls, cables and wires. Wires ran internally with oem hd plugs. Took me 1.5 to install alone. Perfect.

Looked in the service manual. Found how to do the end in the video, but not the other end.

A little late for that.

Default Project complete!

Found out how to pull those pins, got them all back in the right place and everything worked fine on the first try. Love the look and the feel of the beach bars! I have to agree with the people who say that they got better control on the bike, though I do see that low speed maneuvers are different and will take some getting used to.

I now completely understand the need for 7 hours to change out bars and internalize wires. In fact, I tip my hat to anybody who can do it that fast. I certainly could do it again much faster, as I learned several new skills in the process. Thanks to all who shared their experience and gave advice. Now, on to the next project...

How long did it take you from start to finish? I have heard dealer estimates anywhere from 7-9 hours, depending on model, parts, etc.

When I did my apes myself, it was right around 12.5 hours total- that includes putting the bike on my rack, removal of all parts, lengthening the wires, installing all new parts and the old parts, bleeding brakes, clean up and then test ride.

I'm going to say about the same. I didn't need to extend or bleed brakes, but I had lots of other issues. Everything I did was new to me. I've never taken the tank off, pulled pins out, threaded bars, etc. The wires stock would not fit through the holes in the bars, so I had to strip them and shrink wrap them so as to reduce their diameter. I was very slow and methodical, looked at this website, service manual, Google, YouTube, etc. In short, I could do it again in about half the time, but I don't need to now.

I was fortunate to join the "Fix My Hog" site for $10...they had all the video reference I needed...must have watched the "Handlebars 101" 5 times.

The service manual is a MUST for any owner who isnt wrenchphobic...saved my bacon a couple times.
