Oil temp?
I just got a new digital dip-stick temp gauge......
However, anyone know what the max temps should be for my oil on a 2006 Heritage Classic?
I have been looking but cant find what the max and min requirements are for oil temps.
I am not running synthetic, but will be soon... I do know that synthetic does run a bit cooler.
Thanks
Jeff

Generally the temps for most Harley's seems to be around 200 degree's plus or minus 10 degree's. Anything over 230 is not good and over 250 is really pushing the envelope as the oils additives break down very rapidly at or above that temp. Running it too long over 250 the additives basically 'go away'in very short order, making the oil almost hazardous to the internals.
Many of the early07's seemed to run almost excessively hot at about 220 to 225 (mine did) until they came out with a software update for the ECM. That dropped the temps between 10 and 20 degree's and with Syn3 mine is now running between190 & 200, depending on the outside air temps and either local or highway riding.

Syn oil still remians a viable lubricant at over 600 degrees. But as road warrior said those figures are right on. Just think you can slide your Harley parts around on the floor is your engine got that hot, (if on fire) what's left that is. It is good asurance thought that that it gives that much protection.

As for Synthetic oil remaing viable at over 600, that's true. But theadditives in it that an engine needs go Bye-Bye at temps far below that level. So no matter what kind of oil you have in there a good rule of thumb is that anytime it goes over 230/250 for virtually any length of time. Take the cheap and smart wayout and CHANGE IT. Better a few bucks for new oil than the pain, heartache, and cost of a new engine.
Then try to make damn sure it doesn't do it again. That's the kind of nonsense that can easily wreck or serously compromise many of the engines internal working parts in a very short time frame.
it will run cooler with aftermarket pipes and a fuel adjustment...I live in arkansas and have a hard time getting mine over 210, even when it's 100 outside...I also hear Amsoil drops the temp a bunch
I run mobil vtwin, and at bike week rallies in traffic for long periods she will get to 270. At this point I get pinging when rolling throttle, and will start looking for a place to get out of traffic and cruise awhile too cool it down.
