I installed a dipstick with a thermometer in it to monitor the oil temp. I am running 60wt oil in a 74 shovel. I do not have an oil cooler. Temperature read 190 deg F. When this baby is hot it sounds like a typewriter but runs like a bear. When the temp of the oil is around 110 deg F. It is quiet as a mouse except for the pipes. What temp difference will an oil cooler give me and what is a good one to buy that doesn't need a mortgage? What is the normal operating temp of one of these? Today it was about 73 deg F.
That temp is low and should be no problem at all. Oil in a Harley can reach 300 degrees F. I have an 04 twinky and it originally ran up to 265F. I replaced the oil with Amsoil 20-50 and lowered the temp. 30 degrees. This was riding in triple digit weather in Nevada. I have an oil pressure gauge on my shovel but not an oil temp.
My 76 averages 190-200. I don't think there's any need for a cooler unless you're in a very hot environment all the time. If the oil is too cool, it won't reach where it needs to be.

Strickly a twinkie problem with oil that hot a shovel unless somethings bad wrong won't go over 220 even on a 100+ degree days.
OP They get hot tolerances open up and they do run sluggish , ever notice your bike just seems snappier and runs better on colder damp mornings.
On cooler mornings with moisture in the air it has more oxygen. That's why any engine runs better in those conditions. I have a front frame conformed V shaped cooler on my FXE and it barely gets much over 160f and I'm in Australia where we get 110+ in the shade days

Sort of...Moisture don't Compress...so the Compression is Up...Now ya know what a "Skin of Gasket surfaces" can do for you!!
I would Not be comfortable if my oil was Not Hotter than that..Again...Moisture!!
