Default 1994 Harley Softail

My dad was looking to buy a 94 softail Harley, I don't know much about Harleys but I bet you guys know a whole lot about them.

Here's a photo of the bike https://www.hdforums.com/g/picture/2389470

The owner said he bought it like that in pieces I guess previous owner was trying to take it apart to paint the frame but never got around to it. (bike still has motor and tranny on it) The bike has 21k miles.

Guy wants 2,200 for it. Is this a good deal? We can't hear it run or anything but the engine has compression.

What do you guys think, pull the trigger? His asking price was 3,500 and we got him down to 2,200 since that's what he paid (supposedly)

Buying someone else's unfinished project can turn into a real money pit. Missing parts, broken bolts and brackets and things that you just want to change (like the seat) can add up to a lot of money that you will never recover if you sell the bike. If your dad is a good mechanic it could be a good father and son project but don't buy it because it's cheap. There are plenty of good used bikes out there at reasonable prices.

If you don't mind a project, you should get it. I have a 94 softail FXSTC and they're easy to work on. With a service manual, parts catalog, and youtube, you can fix/assemble pretty much anything on it.

Yeah, we are mostly concerned about the price. We want a fair deal. My dad and I love to work on stuff, and my dad is really good at it too.

He mainly wants a good project to work on over the winter. He's never owned a Harley before and always wanted to. I regret saying this here but we both ride jap bikes

At first glance it looks like a good deal...BUT it all depends. That is only a $5000 bike running in descent condition...so if everything is there and you can bolt it back together without much drama...you came out good...if anything is wrong with the bottom end of the motor, you will quickly have more in it than you can sell it for...so it is basically a crap-shoot...roll the dice.

Pretty much a basket case, if you have the spare money go for it. It's a good bike for a project. If motor and trans have no issues your ok. But I would question the 21k for mileage.

Good score if you lose interest you can get more than you paid parting it out. Frame with good numbers is worth $1500.

Some updates: here is the old wheel, really rusted and even bent.

So we replaced it with this beauty!

Started using chrome cleaner and shining her up:

Decided to finish painting the frame.... decided to just do a rattle can job. Looks surprising good.

More updates to come.
