Default Deluxe pillion pad

The misses only rides about 20% of the time so I am cleaning up the rear fender of the deluxe. I have a detatch sissybar and larger pillion pad #52930-05 for when she graces her throne. Does anyone have a thought on whether the stock luggage rack is needed to help support the larger rear pad? I would like not to have to put the stock rack on each time I put on the pillion pad as I want to keep all this simple. Also, any suggestions on what to fill the stock rack holes with on a birch white fender besides black HD plugs? Thx all.

you shouldn't need the rack for support. The mounts are the same as heritage, fatboy, or most other softails that don't have a rack.

HD sells different size chrome plugs, I painted them black. You can try to match the paint colour of your bike so they blend in.

My dealer motioned that but I my have to take them in and out if I have to use the rack with the pillion and I am afraid the paint may not hold up. So far I have 2 small allen head bolts with white fingernail polish. Hard to find the off white that birch white is. Just looking for other ideas. May just have yo go with chrome or ss and be done with it. Thx anyway.

Default Bottom of the pillion pad

After several other mods, I am back to the pillion pad issue again. I'm still not quite sure I asked my question correctly. My concern is not any kind of way the large HD pillion pad, #52930-05, attaches to the bike or fender, but how it rests on the rear fender. The bottom of the seat is not flat allowing a flat rest on the fender like a pillow laying on a bed. It has two indentions at the rear portion of the bottom under the pad and those two indentions are what contacts the fender and should take the bulk of the weight. The stock luggage rack runs next to these indentions and out the back. Notice the seat indentions that rest on the fender. I thought that the rack may help spread the weight of the pad across the fender if the seat actually sits on the rack. I still want to use the seat with out the rack. It will be easier to put the seat on and off without the hassle of installing the stock rack each time, don't need it with the bags. I hope this makes sense. I will attach a pic of the bottom of both the stock and large pad. I hope to put a sheet of 3M clear bra on the fender as well. Thanks to all.

It is fine and does not need the rack for support. I have run mine that way many times. I have even put it on with my fender bib in place. I use the bib to cover the 2 rack holes and mount it under the front seat bracket and when I need the pillion I just put it on over that. No problem. BTW this is on my 2010 Deluxe.

I used my touring pillion on my 07 deluxe many times without the rack and no issues. a fender bib may be your only option with the holes if you don't like the plugs.

I removed the stock rack on mine soon after I bought my deluxe, I usually run a clean rear fender but use the bigger pad that you have sometimes, and no you dont need the rack. If Im understanding you correctly.

thanks for the reply guys. Sounds like the large tour pillion doesn't need the rack for support. I peeled the HD stock clear plastic off because it looked like crap. Does any one put anything under the pillion if your not using a bib?

ON our heritage I left the clear protector on for protection, but I never ride without either the (BiB-backrest) I made or the touring pad on..

the two indentations are what holds the Front of the pilling to the bike they slide into the two nuts that hold the front seat down. Your chrome ones won't work..

the correct ones look like this one that holds the front of the Pillion seat in place....

the metal bracket with the hole for a screw in the rear of the pillion it what holds the pillion down to the fender...

Also, when installing it, I always put on the detachable sissy bar first,, then the seat..

Removing it I take the pillion seat off first then the detachable sissy bar..
