I've never soaked them. They pump up very quickly anyway.
Just make sure you use assembly lube when putting everything back together. This will allow everything to be slick until the oil circulates through the engine.
Thanks guys. Went ahead and adjusted earlier just to see what would happen, and didn't have to wait for bleed down but DID have resistance when turning. Almost immediately I could turn the rods, so I spun the motor manually and found no interference. I'm assuming that all's well at this point.
With plugs out I'm gonna hook up the battery and spin it for a minute or so then fire it up - hopefully that'll speed oil pressure along...
Spinning the motor with the battery is a good safety measure but I don't think enough oil pressure will be created to fully pump up the lifters. Once you fire the bike you may hear a little lifter noise for a few minutes. This is normal.
You didn't state which model bike but I assume it's a twin cam. If you mistakenly installed any of the lifters backwards with the oil hole facing inward you'll have an oil pressure problem. Keep an eye on the oil pressure light or gauge if you have one.
